Valve's support documentation says VAC bans are permanent and Steam Support cannot remove them. Support staff have no authority to lift or override an active ban.
Valve lifts a VAC ban in one case only: when it proves that an automated detection was a false positive across a whole software wave. This page explains the policy and what follows a ban.
Valve's official policy #
Valve states on its support portal that you cannot appeal a VAC ban with a support ticket. Sending more tickets about your personal situation does not change the result.
Valve gives two reasons for this:
- The VAC engine triggers only after it detects code signatures or memory hooks that tamper with game executables, so Valve treats a detection as certain.
- Support staff have no database tools to toggle ban flags. This stops social engineering and bribery.
As our guide on checking Steam VAC bans explains, the ban flag is written to the account record for good.
The only exception: false positive rollbacks #
Valve removes a VAC ban when its engineers find a false positive. They do it automatically, and the player does nothing.
Past causes of false positives include:
- Graphics driver updates or antivirus software that changed game memory during background scans.
- Sync glitches during a major change of a game's client engine.
When Valve finds a faulty detection signature, the engineers roll back the database and clear the ban for all affected users at once. You do not need to contact support to get a rollback.
Common unban myths #
Banned accounts hold expensive skins and lose trade access, so scammers target them. Three claims come up often:
- Paid unban services on Discord or Telegram. A service that promises to delete your ban from Valve's database for money is fraud. The seller keeps your payment or steals your login.
- "My account was hijacked." The Steam Subscriber Agreement makes you responsible for everything done on your account. Valve does not remove the ban even if someone else got in without permission.
- "The ban disappears after 7 years." The red banner leaves your profile after 2,555 days. The ban does not expire, and you still cannot join secure servers.
What happens right after a ban #
A VAC ban does more than block multiplayer:
- Inventory lock. All items from the banned game (CS2 skins or TF2 items, for example) cannot be traded, listed on the Community Market, or moved to another account.
- Phone number block. If the account had a phone number registered when the cheat happened, that number cannot register new accounts in that game for three months.
- Family Sharing lockout. Family members who share the library lose access to that game if the cheat happened while they used shared files.
- A permanent flag in the API. Third-party sites, matchmaking platforms such as FACEIT, and trade hubs see the restriction through the Steam Web API.
Frequently asked questions #
Can Steam Support lift a VAC ban if someone else hacked my account? #
No. Valve's official Steam Support policy says the account holder is responsible for account security. Bans applied while an account was compromised are not removed.
Do paid VAC unban services on Telegram or Discord work? #
No. They are scams. Only automated changes to Valve's internal database can alter a ban state, and no third party can remove a VAC ban.
Can a VAC ban be removed after seven years? #
No. After seven years (2,555 days) Valve hides the red text on the public profile, but the multiplayer restriction and the inventory lock stay on the account forever.
Does a VAC ban transfer to other Steam accounts? #
Sometimes. If several accounts shared the same phone number when the infraction happened, all accounts linked to that number receive a VAC ban.
